Disclaimer: What This Site Is (and What It Definitely Isn't)

Folk Calm is a personal project — a digital archive of traditional Chinese household customs. The rules below keep things honest.

This is cultural documentation, period

Every article on this site describes what neighbors, grandparents, and market vendors have done in Chinese households across generations. The language is plain, the scope is narrow, and the only goal is preservation. I describe practices. I do not evaluate your personal situation, and I do not give professional guidance of any kind — medical, dietary, or otherwise.

Nothing here replaces a qualified professional

If you have questions about plants, heat, salt use, food choices, pregnancy, nursing, children, older adults, or any change you're considering making to your routines — ask a professional who knows your situation. A website written by a stranger on the internet is not the right source for that kind of decision.

What I cover (and what I intentionally avoid)

The site focuses on three narrow categories: external warm water habits (foot soaks, compresses), gentle kitchen customs (ginger tea, rice congee), and slow lifestyle pacing as described in folk sources. I don't publish instructions for swallowing concentrated plant preparations, complex herb combinations, or anything that belongs in a clinical setting. That line is drawn on purpose.

No promises, no guarantees

Comfort varies night to night. What feels good on a Tuesday might not feel good on a Thursday. If anything described on this site doesn't suit you, stop doing it. If you feel unsure about anything, pause and talk to a professional. There is no finish line here and no award for persistence.
